Create a custom shift
If needed, you can create a custom shift Work period in WFM that has a definite length., which is a non-standard shift that is not based on any work rule.
Custom shifts are always locked and cannot be unlocked. Once you save this shift, you need to manually create everything else associated with it, including shift events. When you generate the schedule, the scheduling engine does not optimize the custom shift or any scheduling components associated with the shift (such as shift events).
Before you begin
If you want the option of selecting a standard shift that comes closest to matching the duration for your custom shift, from Tools, select Find best matched work rule. (By default, this option is disabled to optimize performance while using the Calendar.)
When this option is enabled, the system searches for a standard work rule that is closest to the duration of the shift you want to create, and prompts you to select that standard work rule. At that point, you can either select the best matched standard work rule, or save your custom shift. If you select to save the custom shift, it is locked on the schedule and cannot be unlocked.
Procedure
-
Select the employee for whom you want to create a custom shift assignment.
-
Select to create a shift for the employee by doing one of the following:
-
From the Details pane, select Add, and then select Shift.
-
In Hours or Day view only, double-click on any empty space on the schedule (where no assignment exists). Then, select Add from the New Assignment screen.
-
-
From the Shift Assignment screen, remove the contents from the Shift field by selecting the default work rule and selecting the <Delete> or <Backspace> key.
By default, the Shift field is populated with the first shift work rule in the drop-down list. To create a custom shift, you need to manually delete the contents of this field.
-
On the Shift Assignment screen, update the relevant fields for your custom shift.
-
Select Save.
One of the following occurs:
-
If you did not manually select the option, Find best matched work rule, from the Tools menu, the system saves the custom shift. On the schedule, the system displays <custom shift> as the work rule name. When you generate the schedule, the system cannot move it for schedule optimization. It is locked and cannot be unlocked. The only way to unlock the shift is to select a standard work rule for the shift without modifying any of the selected work rule attributes (such as Activity and Duration).
-
If you did manually select the option, Find best matched work rule, from the Tools menu, the system searches for a standard shift that comes closest to matching the duration of your custom shift. After this process, it displays a message, indicating the work rule that best matches the shift you want to create.
-
-
Optional. If the system prompts you to select the best matched standard work rule, do one of the following:
-
To select the best matched standard work rule instead of creating a custom shift, select Yes.
The system saves the shift assignment according to the standard work rule definition. When you generate the schedule, the system can optimize the shift placement, as required. You can lock or unlock the shift.
-
To not select the best matched standard work rule and to create the custom shift, select No.
The system saves the shift assignment as a custom (non-standard) shift.
